Design your website for page scrolling or not?

It is generally accepted that anything that appears below the fold is invisible to the website visitor. Does this still hold true?

A recent research by UIE revealed that users scroll if there is a clue that there is something below the fold.

But should we now forget the ‘above the fold’ rule and format our pages however we want? Probably not.

The thing is that reading without scrolling is still faster than with scrolling, it is important to consider whether or not a single page is enough for the material and whether the design prompts scrolling or not.

Most importantly, however, is that the text should convey the idea with the least possible amount of words to reduce the reading time as well as it should be formatted for the Web (clear headlines, subheadings, lists, short paragraphs, etc).
